You think that ” Your website is stunning and have a piece of great information”, yet when you log in to your Google Analytics account to check the numbers, your bounce rate tells another story.

- 80+ is very poor
- 70-80% is poor
- 50-70% is average
- 30-50% is great
While the above metrics are from just some random reports, bounce rate changes industry to industry and the content type that your website serves.

1. Optimize your page loading time
We assume that if the bounce rate is high, the issue lies with page content and CTA’s. And, we forget that loading speed also matters the metric.
According to Kissmetrics, 47% of visitors expect a blog page to load in 2 seconds or even less. After the time, the users will not wait for your page to load – they might just move on to the other site.
Simply to put, the slower your page loads, the higher your bounce rate will be. Your site will slip low in rankings if your site is too slow to load.
A slow loading website can kill your business and discourage your potential users from taking action on your products or services.
So, what’s your website speed? Find out by using tools like Pingdom.
On the homepage, enter your site URL, click the test button to check your page speed.
As you can see, it took NettyFeed 2.98 seconds to load. And, you can also see the factors that you can work on to improve
So, how do you increase your site speed?
- Make fewer HTTP requests
- Reduce DNS lookups
- Avoid URL redirects
- Make Ajax Cacheable
- Postload components
- Avoid 404s
- Use a CDN
- Add Expires headers
- Gzip components
- Use GET for Ajax requests
- Configure ETags
- Avoid empty image src
- Flush buffer early
- Reduce cookie size
- Use cookie-free domain for components
I improved my blog speed from 9 seconds to 2.98 seconds, Here’s how:
Remove plugins: Every plugin on your blog adds more code to your website, and thus, heavy which slowdowns your site. Keep only essential plugins, in general, the fewer plugins you have the better your speed.
Install cache plugins: Using plugins like Super Cache, Autoptimize, Java Async script will really help your site to load speed.

2. Avoid Sign Ups & Pop-Ups
Popups get a bad impression.
To put it simply, users hate them.
There’s nothing annoying than something getting in between your reading, FORCING you to take time out just to close the popup window.

- Don’t use one popup on every single page or post

- Be honest and help the user to get their email ID
- Include a clear message

I don’t use popups on my site, because that annoys the user experience. I’m not saying popups don’t work, popups work to build your email list quickly.
- Just consider limiting the popups, or make them as non-annoying as possible.
- Popups can be triggered when someone lands on your site. So consider triggering it while leaving the site.

3. Optimize your content to reduce bounce rate
Here’s my deal: The traffic you get to your blog must be relevant and interested in what you offer.
The first and easy change you can do is, Optimize your content and title with the relevancy factor.
What does this do?
It helps to increase the quality of the organic traffic that comes in from SERPs.

- Title 2 – How to reduce Bounce rate on your WordPress blog?
Here, title 1 and 2 are two different concepts. So, you can’t just get the quality traffic related to Title 1 to Title 2. Just renaming the title doesn’t help you to reduce your bounce rate and thus rankings.
When you write a title 2 then obviously users will look for a relevant answer, if it is not found then they leave and your bounce rate increase. This might decrease the traffic to your website, but it will increase the quality and readability. This, in turn, reduces the bounce rate. A simple change like this made across your content can have great results.
There’s nothing powerful than content that is relevant to your users.
You need to make sure your content is simple and easy to read and has something interesting to continue. You can do that by doing things like:
- Adding images, videos if necessary
- Making text bold
- Adding bullet points
- Breaking your content into smaller pieces
Your content should be interesting, accurate and appealing and talk about the title related information.
There are some techniques like Agree-Promise-Preview model and the Bridge model that you can use in intros.

4. Put mobile first
Is your website or blog is responsive? When a user visits it on their phone, tablet or any other device, will it display the content and media properly?
You have to ensure your website works great on mobile devices too. Because users will have their mobiles with them everywhere they go.
We are living in the mobile era. Almost 85% of your users are on mobile, so don’t make them disappointed. Remember both search engines and users are asking you to offer a mobile-friendly platform.
Google always listen to its customers. The best way that Google gets information is by monitoring the user behavior on your site, from computer and mobile.
In fact, mobile friendliness is a ranking factor now. It means that if your site is not mobile optimized, no matter how valuable your content may be, it won’t rank in SERP results.
Give users a super experience on mobile to stop them from bouncing. It means:
- Make sure text, images and videos fits the screen of the mobile
- Your users will start looking for the main menu when they land on to your any blog post. So, keep it as easy to access feature.
- Use clear and easy navigation options across the site.
- Optimize your mobile page loading speed by reducing the file size, using AMP and cache plugin
- Keep a footer that connects to the home page and some main pages
- Put easily shared social media buttons on the right/left/header/footer.
- Do not forget to keep the search option on every page
Test your site, by following below steps:
Step 1: You can run your website through Google’s Mobile test to make sure that your site is optimized for mobile too.
Step 2: Give it a 30-60 seconds time to fetch your site data and see the results
If you’re a WordPress blogger, it’s very easy to make your blog mobile optimized. All you have to do is install the plugins like AMP or Jetpack and activate it.
If you’re not WordPress, I recommend you taking the help of professionals to get this fixed.
5. Internal link building
Plain and simple, this strategy keeps your users on your site for a long time. It is a good SEO practice to increase your SERP results, it also helps in decreasing your bounce rate.
If you’re using the WordPress platform you can do this easily by ‘insert/edit’ link feature.
But do not go too crazy with this strategy. Add only where it is necessary when the link offers relevant and genuine information to the user.
When your user clicks on the link for information, they expect to be taken to that page, but should not disappointed with 404 error page.
This leads to bad user experience and they might not return to your web page again in the future.
Hence, you need to thoroughly verify your links and make sure they are all working fine.
If you cannot go through your whole site, head to your Google webmaster console and click on the coverage to check if there are any broken links.
Here you can see the errors of your site (if any) and warnings.
Once you fix the errors and broken links, come back again to the console and mark it as fixed so that the URL will be crawled again.
- Work on your internal linking structure smartly, and users will be more likely to stay put on your website.
- Do not stuff the sentences with Internal linking, it looks unprofessional and cheap. This can confuse your customers and make them leave overall from your website.
Finally, ensure that all the links open in a new tab so that you don’t redirect the user from your current page.
6. Show-off your trustworthiness
You might be wondering how this factor actually helps in reducing the bounce rate?
The word trustworthiness is the ability to inspire trust in other people.
When they trust you after seeing reading your content or seeing some genuine factor on your website, they will stay and continue reading.
But, the question is,
Why should user trust in you?
How does the user perceive you?
Trustworthiness is important – Work on it.
I understand you have to sell your product to make your life. At the same time, let the user know why should they trust you and buy your product.
I cannot help you with the what factors you need to work on to improve this factor. No one can, sure. But, if you ask me, I can tell that being transparent and giving some valuable information that the user needs will help.
At the end of the day, you don’t buy from the company you don’t trust. Do you?
Such a trusted site does the following:
- Makes user trust you by providing accurate information
- Give them the assurance that you will be with them to help, after all, it’s their hard-earned money
- Be honest and transparent, don’t show the numbers which you can’t serve
- Keep your website simple and plain
- Make your address and contact information accurate
- Use simple language in your content, no one wants to be confused
- Let them know your achievements and talents in the form of reviews or recommendations on your site
Do you ever think, Why people buy always from brands like Apple, Samsung or Amazon, etc even though they might not have great offers compared to others? Because they think these are trustworthy brands.
7. Don’t make them confuse, Include clear Call-To-Action (CTA)
After your visitors landed on the page, the first thing they do is that they go through the complete page. So make sure you have an attractive and clear CTA button. Do not lose them with a poor CTA after making huge effort to make them land on your website.

For that, Does your blog or website have a relevant Call-To-Action? To put simply, besides reading and leave, does your page have something valuable for the user?

These kinds of exit CTAs detect customer behavior and only appear when it seems like they are likely to exit the page. Such pop-ups are a fantastic way of getting your user attention while giving them a reason to stay.
After reading everything on your site if the user is not convinced then these kinds of popups really helps to make them buy by offering discounts.
If you’re still not convinced, do you agree there are billions of websites on the Internet?
If a visitor comes to read and leaves your blog, Will that user ever find your site again? Have you offered that prospect something to remember you? Have you taken a step – like a subscribe or download, so that you can stay in contact with that visitor?
The goal should be to make a connection with prospects. Later on, you can try to turn them to buy something from you.
Don’t confuse your users with multiple CTAs and keep the relevancy of content to CTA.
8. Guide users to what to do next
I have mentioned above that one way of reducing the bounce rate is to use internal linking strategy in a logical way.
While this is a great way, a similar method is to offer user options on what to do next.
- Displaying ‘related articles’ at the bottom of your article
- To keep a search box in Header or Footer
- Using sidebar widgets with popular posts
Give your visitors the chance to read similar content related to the current reading content. Offer them more content helps you convert them into customers.
I suggest you use the Jetpack plugin to display related posts automatically.
